국가유산청 국립문화유산연구원 국립경주문화유산연구소(소장 임승경)는 '2025년 APEC 정상회의'를 맞아 10월 30일부터 11월 1일까지 3일간, 쪽샘유적발굴관(경북 경주시)에서 「경주 쪽샘 44호분 축조실험 설명회」를 개최한다.

신라 왕족인 어린 여성(공주)의 무덤으로 추정되는 '쪽샘 44호분'은 비단벌레 날개로 만든 말다래 등 800여 점의 유물이 출토된 신라의 대표적인 무덤이다.
국립경주문화유산연구소는 지난 2014년부터 2023년까지 발굴조사와 학제 간 연구를 실시하여, 무덤 축조의 전 과정과 기술을 밝혀낸 바 있으며, 2024년부터는 10년간의 조사·연구 성과를 바탕으로 다시 무덤을 쌓아보는 축조실험을 진행하고 있다. 이는 세계 고고학사적으로도 유일한 실험이어서 많은 주목을 받고 있다.
현재 축조실험은 목조구조물을 세운 뒤 무덤 주인공의 시신과 부장품을 안치한 2중의 덧널 일부를 만들고, 주변으로 돌을 쌓는 과정을 진행하고 있으며, 이는 무덤을 만드는 21단계 전체 공정 중 8단계에 해당한다.
설명회는 APEC 기간에 맞추어 3일간 진행되며, 오전 10시부터 오후 5시까지, 30분마다 발굴조사에 참여했던 학예연구사와 연구원이 직접 진행하는 해설을 들으며 축조실험을 관람할 수 있다.
참가자들은 쪽샘 44호분 발굴 성과에 대한 설명을 듣고, 덧널·목조구조물·돌무지 등 주요 시설, 덧널과 뚜껑을 만드는 방법과 축조에 사용된 도구 등에 대한 해설을 들으며 축조 실험 현장을 살펴본 뒤, 실제 출토 유물도 관람하게 된다.

이번 축조실험 설명회는 관심 있는 누구나 사전 신청 없이 참가 가능하며, 외국인을 위한 영어, 일본어, 중국어 통역도 함께 준비되어 있다.
이번 행사는 APEC 참가자들을 대상으로 운영되는 관광프로그램(APEC 2025 KOREA TOUR PROGRAM)의 일환으로, 내국인뿐만 아니라 외국인도 누구나 참여할 수 있어 신라의 역사와 문화를 생생하게 느낄 수 있는 기회가 될 것으로 기대한다.

The Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (Director: Seung-kyung Lim) will hold a Public Presentation of the Jjoksaem Tomb No. 44 Construction Experiment from October 30 to November 1, 2025, at the Jjoksaem Archaeological Exhibition Hall in Gyeongju during APEC 2025.

Jjoksaem Tomb No. 44, believed to be the burial site of a young female member of the Silla royal family, underwent extensive excavation and interdisciplinary research from 2014 to 2023. The investigations revealed the tomb's complete construction process and techniques and uncovered over 800 artifacts, including a mudguard adorned with jewel beetles, making it one of the most iconic tombs of the Silla period.
Since 2024, researchers have conducted a construction experiment to rebuild the tomb, building on ten years of excavation and research and drawing attention as a unique project in the history of world archaeology.
The experiment is now in progress, focusing on building the wooden structure inside the stone mound, placing the deceased and burial goods in a section of the double chamber, and stacking stones around it. These activities collectively constitute the eighth stage of the tomb's 21-step construction process.
Researchers who participated in the excavations will host a three-day presentation during APEC 2025 in Gyeongju, running from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. They will give guided tours every 30 minutes in Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese.

The presentation will proceed in five stages: (1) presenters will provide an overview of the excavation results of Jjoksaem Tomb No. 44, (2) they will explain the purpose and sequence of the construction experiment, (3) they will describe key features such as the double chamber, wooden structure, and stone mound, (4) they will demonstrate the methods and tools used to build the double chamber and its cover, and (5) they will guide participants in viewing the actual artifacts.
As part of the APEC 2025 Korea Tour Program, one of the official programs of APEC 2025 Gyeongju, this event invites domestic and international visitors to a vivid experience of Silla's history and culture.
The Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage will continue to host diverse academic events for audiences from Korea and abroad to promote Silla's rich culture worldwide.
